Overview
King Quest Kodiak 2210mm (87") Wingspan - ARF from Nexa - NXA1052-001
This Nexa King Question Kodiak is brand new to the Nexa lineup at the end of 2022. This brand new aircraft is absolutely full of scale details. The full size King Quest Kodiak is a multi-purpose STOL plane and this model is a gorgeous replica of the original. With all the scale details and a 2200mm wingspan, this model is impressive from both near and far. Though this plane is large, the 2 piece wing can be fairly easily removed for transportation to and from the field. As with the original, this plane does not require a lot of runway for takeoff and landing. Handling is fantastic.
This Nexa model can be setup with either gas or electric power system. The super large hatch allows easy access to either battery or fuel tank. Servo pockets make installed the standard size servos (control surfaces) and micro sized servos (flaps) a breeze.

I had a hard time installing the landing gear skirts and they ended up very ugly - enough to order new spares and redo. So, take your time. Instructions are there but not explained easy - so you need to trial and error some steps. Bolts for landing gear and nose steering do not go in easy and the fit-up needs some TLC. So if you are not comfortable with minor modifications and make something work this is not the plane for you. Its very typical Nexa (VQ Models). The plastic parts, especially for the nose steering and wing bolts are very cheap and could be upgraded. My wheels were Oval and not round but MRC graciously sent me three new wheels. All in all, I am enjoying this model but need to give it 4 stars due to these minor issues.

The hardware is garbage. From rusted pushrods to aluminum screws with shallow heads, “building” this plane was not a fun experience. 2. They have you screw the wing struts into a non-existent “pre-drilled” hole in the wing. Based on where the strut needs to mount, there is barely any wood to receive and retain the screw. 3. The plastic fairings are brittle and sort of sloppy. Then again, it’s a $550 airplane so I cannot expect more. 4. The plastic nose gear is, well, PLASTIC. C’mon. Let’s see some aluminum here. The way the wheels mount is lowbrow (bolts and nuts through cheap wheels). 5. The hinging is from 1980. Believe me, I remember. I did take their advice and drill holes vertically through the stab and elevator to insert a toothpick so the hinges wouldn’t give way in flight. GREAT scale appearance to have painted toothpick plugs! 6. The prop needs to be bored out to fit the 12mm shaft on the motor. Having to buy the spinner separately is just silly. Bundle it. Also, at my altitude (6K feet), this guy needs more than the thin 16” x10 prop. I am trying to figure out whether Motion’s Spitfire 4-blade prop/spinner setup will work. 7. The airplane is docile and easy to fly. I tried 6S 6000 packs but I may go to two 4S 5000’s for more power. I’m certainly trying the 16” x 12 APC prop. 8. I like the size and standoff scale appearance of this plane. I just think Nexa needs to up its game when it comes to hardware and certain design elements.

I chose to strip and replace the covering with lighter covering in a scheme that matches an actual Kodiak. This isn't necessary, just a choice I made. I also chose the power this plane with an electric setup. I used a 120 amp esc and a 46 sized motor, 8s (2 4s 5000 mah lipo batts in series) turning a 16x10 4 blade prop. This setup gives me 8 minutes of touch and go flight that leaves around 50 percent left in the batteries or 10 minutes of regular flight that still leaves around 40 percent. I can fly at around 50 percent and it does not require full throttle to leave a grass runway. It is a heavy plane all up but that makes it fly well. It is very docile, I have ended up with no expo and it is still docile. The listed control throws are too conservative, I set mine to the throws of the real aircraft which ends up at the hinge limits of the model, it flies well in this setup. Landing is nice as long as you configure and establish a good landing approach. Too slow and it will fall out, too fast and it'll skip down the runway. The landing gear has proven to be much more robust than I thought it would be. Our runway has some rough areas and I've had some less than stellar landings and it just takes it like a champ. This is not an aerobatic plane but it's a great just cruise around plane and once trimmed it just flies without fuss and holds a line beautifully. It would make a good scale masters plane if a person was to correct the flaws compared to the real aircraft.

I don’t know how he got the rear exhaust to fit. I had to sell the rear exhaust and purchase a side exhaust. With the engine mounted on the included rail mounts the exhaust would hit the front wheel turning assembly. Even the manual shows a rear exhaust but no matter what I did could not get it to fit. I installed the G T lighting kit to mine. It took a lot of work to get lights into the wingtips but we’ll worth the extra time. I also upgraded some of the hardware but not all of it. I’m almost done with the build and very happy so far. I do know that this will be a very heavy airplane and I’m not expecting much for performance. I really like how open the fuselage is for working and mounting different items needed for a gas engine. I will post pictures when I’m finished on RCG.

So far everything else is going fairly smooth....I haven't completed the model but I'm about 85% done..
